If you love your country and want to help steer it in the right direction, many sources have told you the best thing you can do is to vote in elections. Do you trust that idea anymore? Below are some other things you can do—many of them any time during the year—that will likely have a much greater impact than a single vote in what may or may not be a fair election.
Contacting politicians
We have seen instances where large enough numbers of people contacting their legislators have managed to steer them away from a bad policy and/or towards a good one. Perhaps the strongest examples are the times that Congress has considered some sort of amnesty bill.
It is not hard to find the means to contact your elected officials. Keep this information convenient. What you tell them does not have to be particularly lengthy at all. If you do not have the time to construct a short email or letter, there are plenty of groups that have sample letters.
In addition to your elected officials, consider contacting the Republican leadership within any given chamber as well.
Write to businesses
Many businesses cave all too quickly to the elitist, lefty regressives, some because they think it is good for their business if they do so. We need to let them know that there are also customers who are pro-liberty, pro-America, objective and skeptical, etc.
Boycott bad businesses and patronize good ones
Some argue that boycotting businesses that cave to big government talking points is of little benefit, but we disagree. If enough of us do it, it can get their attention. In the meantime, you will be depriving them of some amount of money that they could then turn around and give to lefty regressive causes.
Write letters to the editor
These can be somewhat time consuming. Again, you could also look for some suggestions for content from other organizations.
Give money to pro-liberty causes
I know, we each only have so much money. However, there are a lot of groups out there doing a lot of good, and of course it takes money for them to function. Insofar as you do not feel equipped to do some of the things on this list, it certainly may make sense to help fund the people who do these sorts of things on a daily basis.
Volunteer for phone calls/door knocking/texts near election times
Yes, we have been shown how elections can be rigged. However, (1) let’s keep people showing up and voting for freedom as much as possible, so that we win when elections are fair, and (2) aside from that person’s vote, you may help educate them or persuade them towards the pro-liberty position for all the time between elections as well. You might also volunteer as a poll watcher on the day of the election.
Join pro-liberty organizations
Depending on the organization, doing this can help in a variety of ways. You will find like-minded individuals, you may find ways to volunteer or promote the cause of liberty, and you may have access to other resources and information, such as content for letters and emails.
Attend events
These days there are numerous pro-liberty events to attend, and it is likely that some of them are within a drivable distance for you.
Start a book club or discussion group
Your local library or community center could be a meeting place for a monthly discussion group of a pro-liberty book. A group like this could well be where some people gain the perspective they need to be able to throw off the shackles of regressive group-think.
Be vocal with your friends and family
Within the context of your family and friends, you know how much you can bring up political topics at various times. However, it is good to always be ready to speak up when the opportunity arises. Help provide your friends and family with the talking points that they, in turn, would benefit from having on the forefront of their political thoughts.
Stay educated and informed
It takes a proactive approach to keep yourself informed on as many issues as possible. You may want to keep a short list of key information handy (perhaps on your phone). Know your sources. Prepare your sound bites and talking points. Be ready to defend liberty at every turn.
Local government and schools
Be a watchdog for local government activity, where it generally takes fewer voices to foment change. Part of where we have been losing a battle of ideas is in the education system. Look for opportunities to support good teaching and to limit brainwashing. You might also find ways to support non-government schooling such as charter schools or homeshool groups.
Other
There are other things as well that one could do to promote liberty if one stays on the lookout for such opportunities.
Yes, we would all rather be left alone to live our lives the way we choose, without having to spend much if any time on political activities. However, in the world we live in, do you think we can afford to take this approach?
